the No Plan Trip, Day 2

Day two seen us travel across Lake Michigan via a ferry, visit a cave and ride into the cold night cause I once again miss calculated! We started out on the Lake Express ferry in Muskegon MI. Leaving promptly at 10:15am, there were no waves, which was good because as soon as the announcements mentioned motion sickness, I felt like Lucy when she took Fred on the Staten Island ferry to cure his sea sickness. A ginger ale and some mind melting convinced me that all was well.  We sped across at 31 knots (35.67mph), we traveled 68 miles from Muskegon to Milwaukee. It was a really nice ride taking 2hrs 45 min. We did cross into Central time in the middle of the lake. We skirted around Milwaukee and went west, passing Pewaukee, (what's up with that?). We headed south on the back roads and stopped at Cave of the Mounds National Natural Landmark. Dave is a sucker for stalagmites and stalactites so, a cave stop on every trip is a must. It was ok, but if you've seen one cave, you've seen them all! He digs this stuff so much that he (believe me, it's true) interacted with our young guide, answering questions and saying words like awesome and cool. From there, we headed again on the back roads towards Minnesota. We came upon a field of flags and had to stop. It was an American Legion post and each flag was a marker for a veteran that received the purple heart in combat.  Each event in military history was there, I seen Civil War right up to Iraq. I'm not sure if they were actually buried there, cause some had death dates and some did not. Needless to say, we thought it was very nice. At the state line between Wisconsin and Minnesota, we crossed the great Mississippi River. It is much more impressive up here than further down towards St. Louis. It was dusk by then, so we had to move as our hotel for the night was 120 miles west and the cold was setting in fast. We ended the night at Austin, Minnesota after traveling 400 miles plus 68 on the water. Tomorrow is a wait and see day as it's supposed to rain and we would like to find the Buffalo Bills football game if we can.  Take care everyone, see ya tomorrow!
